New 25 MPH Speed Limit

The Town of South Hadley has adopted Massachusetts General Law Chapter 90, Section 17C, lowering the default speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph in thickly settled residential areas and business districts. The measure aims to improve road safety and align with South Hadley’s long term commitment to safer, more connected neighborhoods.

This step is supported by local crash trends. In calendar year 2024, South Hadley reported 265 motor vehicle crashes—an increase from 195 in the previous year. Crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists have also risen steadily over the past three years, prompting town officials to take action.

“This new speed limit not only helps create safer streets for everyone, but also supports a more efficient use of our department’s time and resources,” said Chief of Police Gundersen. “Our officers spend a significant amount of time addressing speeding complaints and conducting traffic stops. Reducing the default speed limit is a practical way to encourage safer driving habits without needing constant enforcement.”

The change affects only roads that do not already have a posted speed limit, which are now subject to the new 25 mph statutory limit. Roads with black and white speed limit signs will remain unchanged.

“Thank you to Town Meeting members for overwhelmingly supporting a policy that will promote safe driving, reducing crashes, and creating safer, more accessible roads for everyone” said South Hadley Town Administrator Lisa Wong

South Hadley now joins several nearby communities—including Amherst, Hadley, and Northampton—in adopting this safety centered policy. The new limit complements the town’s broader efforts to reduce traffic hazards and make streets safer for all users, including walkers, cyclists, and drivers.
